About Psychotherapy

Core Process Psychotherapy

Core Process Psychotherapy is a contemporary psychotherapeutic approach that integrates western psychodynamic understanding with Buddhist mindfulness practices. You do not need to hold a particular belief, or to know anything about mindfulness or meditation to benefit from it. All you need to do is bring yourself to sessions with curiosity and openness.

The safety and acceptance we build between us in the therapeutic relationship is foundational. We will work collaboratively and creatively, at a pace that feels right for you. As relational beings, our wounding happens in relationship. So in therapy we pay particular attention to the ways in which you may be influenced, in the present moment, by your earliest experiences. Patterns of pushing away pain or fear may be discovered that are no longer useful and may, in fact, be keeping you stuck. By recognising these habitual shapes within the compassionate context of the therapeutic relationship, we open up the possibility of moving past what has been holding you back.

Therapy is your time to explore who you are, at depth. Central to the work is a recognition of the intimate relationship between mind and body. Mindfulness practices have, for millennia, acknowledged this mind-body connection, a link now supported by contemporary neuroscience and trauma research. Unresolved distress may be held in the body as tension, chronic pain or low energy levels, or you may feel empty or numb. Our bodies recall our pain with more clarity than our brains can remember. During therapy, present-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations can offer insight into what is happening for you holistically, on mental, emotional and physical levels.

By gently noticing the parts that are hurting, we can begin to befriend what is happening internally. We will also make room for the things in your life that are nourishing, meaningful and inspiring. With this understanding and with real compassion for yourself, you may discover more freedom of choice and be able to move towards connection, wholeness and wellbeing.
